ldl receptor
The cholesterol ration is read by the Total: LDL and HDL:LDL, where LDL means low-density lipoprotein and HDL means high-density lipoprotein. Though heredity has its role in high cholesterol level, diet is the main target of physicians when it comes to treating the condition. Although it is not always easy to cut out high cholesterol food from you diet, in the long run it will help you lower or maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Of course, each individual is different and there may be a slight variation to the ideal cholesterol ratio, but generally this should read Total: HDL 3. Most importantly limiting food high in cholesterol will bring long-term benefits to your child. Remember, even those who have a normal cholesterol level can still be at risk for heart attack and stroke, so never ignore symptoms that might be signs of these serious health conditions.

Cholesterol: Good and Bad For You
Everyone has heard of cholesterol but not everyone knows what it entails; there are both good and bad types of Cholesterol. By learning more and reducing your cholesterol intake, you can help to reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke as well as live a healthier life.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the fats in your bloodstream and in all of your cells. Your body uses it for many things; its used to make cell membranes and hormones, as well as other functions necessary for a healthy body. However, too much of it can increase your chance for heart disease and other problems.
Cholesterol, like other fats, cannot dissolve in the bloodstream. Therefore, they must be carried by carriers called lipoproteins. There are several kinds of cholesterol but the two most important kinds to pay attention to are low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL)
LDL
Low density lipoprotein, or LDL, is the major carrier of cholesterol in the body. If the bloodstream contains too much LDL it can begin to build up in the arterial walls and can block precious blood from reaching the heart, brain and other important parts of the body, causing plaque to form. Plaque is a thick, hard substance that blocks the flow of blood in the arteries. If too much plaque forms in the arteries leading to the heart, the heart cannot get enough blood and a heart attack is often the result. If too much plaque forms in the arteries leading to the brain, the brain cannot get enough blood and a stroke results. For this reason, LDL is often referred to as bad cholesterol. By keeping your LDL level low, you can better protect yourself against heart attack or stroke.
HDL
High density lipoprotein, or HDL, is considered good cholesterol. The reason for this is that about one third to one fourth of blood cholesterol is carried by the high density lipoproteins. Experts believe that HDL actually carries cholesterol away from the arteries to the liver, where its passed out of the body. Some experts believe that HDL relieves plaque and slows its growth. A higher HDL level decreases your chance for a heart attack, stroke and many other types of heart disease.
To keep LDL down and HDL up, it is important to eat a healthy diet, by consuming more fruits and vegetables and staying away from high concentrations of saturated fat that is usually found in foods that come from animals. Also, it is important to get some sort of exercise. By living a healthy lifestyle and being conscious of what goes into your body, you can continue to keep heart disease and stroke at bay and prolong leading a long, healthy life.
