human high density lipoprotein hdl
The cholesterol home test is a great way to check to see if you are indeed living a healthy lifestyle. Foods to avoid while on a high cholesterol diet are those foods classified as high in saturated fat. Cholesterol can build up in the arteries and harden into plaque narrowing the arteries, which can diminish blood supply going to the heart and brain, increasing the risk for heart attack or stroke. Additionally, genetics plays a major role in high cholesterol. Fast food restaurants seem to specialize in that high cholesterol food that tastes so good, but many fast food chains are beginning to offer more health-conscious choices that have little or no cholesterol.

The reason for this is that about one third to one fourth of blood cholesterol is carried by the high density lipoproteins. Cholesterol is a fat that our metabolism requires in the healthy performance of many of our bodily functions; however, too much of a good thing can have the opposite effect. This cholesterol is known as the HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoproteins) and this is the good type of cholesterol.

Why Cholesterol Testing is Important?

Everybody has cholesterol, but this is not necessarily bad news. Not many people know that cholesterol is not bad by default, and that there is good cholesterol, as well. The one that harms the body is the bad cholesterol and is called low-density lipoprotein (LDL and the VLDL very low-density lipoprotein). The build up of this type of cholesterol in the body causes hardening of the arteries, which increases the possibility of heart attack and other heart-related complications.

The cholesterol in the blood is measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood and reads as mg/dl. Optimally the LDL should stay below 100 mg/dl and the HDL should be above 40 mg/dl; the total should stay within 200 mg/dl. According the medical guidelines the optimal ratio is 3.3:1 for Total:HDL and 1.7:1 for LDL:HDL.

Cholesterol testing is necessary to know whether you are in danger of cardiovascular problems. The testing will also indicate whether the LDL and HDL are within their limits or not. Many times, the total is optimal while the ratio of the LDL and HDL are not ideal. Only the cholesterol testing can tell you if your cholesterol is within the acceptable norms or not, and ideally, this test is carried out on a yearly basis.

The Uses of Home Cholesterol Testing

You may not like to go to the doctor everytime you want to know whether your cholesterol levels are within limits or not, so in the meantime, what other means can you adopt to keep a track of your cholesterol? The answer is home cholesterol testing kits. These kits will be able to give you a general indication whether you are within or outside danger, usually with three types of readings, (i) high risk, (ii) borderline, and (iii) desirable.

As you can see the home cholesterol testing kits will give you a general idea of the overall level of your cholesterol. It is, of course, not sufficient as you do not get the individual LDL and HDL readings, which tell you from where the danger is if you are in the high risk or borderline case. But at least, it gives you an idea whether you should pay more attention to your health or you should be satisfied with the way things are.

The home cholesterol testing kits are okay if you need to just follow up on the course of your cholesterol level, but for an accurate picture the proper medical testing is required.
