High cholesterol is the number one cause for heart disease and stroke, so what is cholesterol, exactly? Everyone has heard of cholesterol and almost everyone knows that too much of it is bad for you but not many people know exactly what it is and even less about how to maintain lower levels of it.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in fat and other cells that helps the body in a variety of ways. Your body uses cholesterol to make cell membranes, hormones and other ways to help your body stay healthy, however, there are several different types of cholesterol and not all kinds are good for you.

Bad Cholesterol

Cholesterol is carried through the bloodstream by substances called lipoproteins. Low density lipoprotein, or LDL, is considered bad cholesterol. High cholesterol levels of LDL cause plaque buildup in the arterial walls, when too much plaque gathers in the arteries, blood cannot get to vital organs such as the heart or brain and the result is a heart attack, heart disease or a stroke.

High density lipoprotein, or HDL, is considered good cholesterol. High HDL cholesterol levels actually work to decrease the amount of plaque in your arteries; high cholesterol in the form of HDL carries excess plaque to your liver where its passed to your liver and then out of your body.

When your doctor tells you about high cholesterol, however, hes talking about LDL, the bad cholesterol. To keep your LDL levels down, you must eat better; eating too many foods high in saturated fat can raise your LDL levels; foods high in saturated fat are generally foods that come from animals, like eggs, beef, and chicken.

Exercise is another way to relieve your body of high cholesterol levels. Any kind of exercise three times a week generally should be enough to improve your health and keep your cholesterol levels down to more manageable levels.

To stave off heart attack and stroke and to keep high cholesterol at bay, eat better, get more exercise and be conscious of the lifestyle you lead. That means no smoking, keeping alcohol consumption to minimum and making a decision to lead a healthier, low cholesterol lifestyle.
