In terms of the ratio of total cholesterol to good cholesterol, 5:1 or less is a healthy level while greater than this is undesirable. A good question when you look at it, because there are a number of medications that help control cholesterol quickly and efficiently. There are some rules, however, that must be followed in order to get accurate results with your cholesterol home test, for example, some people dont adequately fast before taking the test, which can produce inaccurate results; some people dont realize that your results can be too high after eating a fatty meal.

The foods that give high cholesterol and should be totally excluded from your diet are eggs, red meat (beef), and dairy products. Other than that, the cholesterol reducing diet is highly beneficial for all concerned. Once the nutritionist prescribes the food on daily basis, the list for the whole week should be finalized and each week can add a few variants so the food does not become monotonous. Irrelevant of your age, speak to your doctor to find out everything about your cholesterol and what cholesterol medicine is right for you before it gets out of hand. However, sometimes reading food labels isnt enough, a recent study showed that people are reading food labels but arent deterred from eating those foods they know are bad for them. Good Cholesterol Level for Healthy Life

Good cholesterol is another name for high-density lipoprotein (or HDL in short). A higher good cholesterol level in the body is an effective agent against cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and high blood pressure). It acts by carrying cholesterol away from the cells by binding to it and carrying it to the liver in order to be removed from the body. Thus it protects agsinst builing up of plaque in the arteries and decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Desirable Good Cholesterol Level

The total cholesterol in blood is the sum of good cholesterol, bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL) and a fraction of triglycerides. The measure of good cholesterol level in the blood is usually expressed in terms of milligrams per deciliter or mg/dL. Another unit used is milli moles per liter or mmol/L.

Yet another useful expression is the ratio of total cholesterol to good cholesterol. According to the National Institutes of Health, the desirable level of total cholesterol in blood should be under 200 mg/dL (5.17 mmol/L). The ideal good cholesterol level should be over 60 mg/dL (1.56 mmol/L). However a general level of 4060 mg/d (1.041.56 mmol/L) is considered normal and healthy.

Blood level of good cholesterol less than 40 mg/dL (1.04 mmol/L) is not healthy and puts one at a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases. In terms of the ratio of total cholesterol to good cholesterol, 5:1 or less is a healthy level while greater than this is undesirable. It is important to note that women generally need a relatively higher level of good cholesterol (at least 50 mg/dL) than men (at least 40 mg/dL).

Improving Good Cholesterol Level

While some patients need medication for improving their good cholesterol level, many people can attain a higher good cholesterol level by means f diet, exercise, weight control and life style in general. In diet, cholesterol in general and animal fat in particular should be limited while at the same time increasing consumption of starch and fiber (complex carbohydrates). Weight can be controlled by either or both dieting and exercise.

It has been found that using alcohol in moderate quantities increases good cholesterol level in blood. For men, moderate quantity of alcohol intake will be two drinks daily and for women, one drink per day (355 mL of beer, 148 mL of wine, or 44 mL of liquor). However, before consuming alcohol, one must consult a physician in order to prevent any risk of heart diseases, cirrhosis, hypertension etc.
